Sensory Training Clinic
Cedar Lane Farm Haflingers attend Mounted Police Clinic September 2, 2005 we attended a clinic held at the Kentucky Horse Park for Sensory Training techniques used in Mounted Police work. The clinic was put on by the Horse Patrol Commission of Lexington and was instructed by Officers Lisa Rakes and Dave Johnson of the Lexington Mounted Police Division. The guest instructors were Sgt. Len Klimpke of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, head trainer for the Musical Ride and Inspectors Alan Hiscox and Steve Lorrigan, head trainers for the London Metro Police and Queens guards. We took our 6 year old Haflinger stallion, Notable and a 5 yr old gelding here in training, Navaho . Both were extremely willing and interested in the things to do and activities, it was like a giant playground for horses and riders! They did Nuisance Training with the London instructors, Equitation with the Canadian and Obstacle training with the Lexington officers. Both were praised by instructors and participants alike for their steadiness and willingness. Notable was ridden by our dressage trainer, Jennifer Grant and Navaho was ridden by our young horse trainer, Alverna Hess. The trainers picked up some new ideas for working with our young horses and training horses to help them be more educated in real world activities. The horses learned to walk on mattresses and bridges, learned to go through loud crowds of people with flags and umbrellas and general scary things they might encounter in police work, even stuffed bodies hanging and lying around! We think it was very educational and well run with about 30 horses in attendance and three groups all going in turns. Hopefully we will be able to go again next year if they offer it.
