Pets at Cedar Lane

A farm wouldn't be complete without a variety of pets and Cedar Lane is home for several.

We have a brand new pup!  A beautiful English Shepherd has joined our farm to help protect and herd the livestock.  He was brought home as a young pup to be trained in general farm duties by us and our old dog, Shadow (can you tell he is positively thrilled with his job?).  We named him Rustler, as he will be responsible to "rustle up" the cows when needed.  He was bred by Statzer Hollow Farm in Ohio from a long line of purebred English Shepherd working dogs.  You can see his photos on many of our livestock pages, he loves to supervise and make sure everyone is in the proper place.

In Memoriam

Babe the Beagle, a friend to all she met, a free spirit, loving and kind.
After thirteen years on our farm, we will always miss you, Babe.

Shadow is a Golden Retriever/Great Pyrenees mix who was rescued by a friend from the pound and we fell in love with his sweet face about 9 years ago.

Anna is a black Labrador Retriever who was donated to the farm a couple years ago.  She is super friendly and loves everyone and everything.  She greets visitors with a big doggy smile! Anna passed away in the summer of 2009.   We miss her friendly face.

Skip is our Jack Russell Terrier and he thinks he is the biggest dog on the farm!
We lost Skip in 2009 and have a huge hole in our hearts and home where he used to be.  We still miss him terribly.

From time to time, people tell me,
"lighten up, it's just a dog,"
or "that's a lot of money for just a dog."

They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent,
or the costs involved for "just a dog."

Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog."
Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog,:
but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog,"
and in those days of darkness,
the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you too, think it's "just a dog,"
then you won't understand phrases like
"just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise."

"Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship,
trust and pure unbridled joy.
"Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience
that makes me a better person.

Because of "just a dog" I will rise early, take long walks
and look longingly to the future.

So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog"
but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future,
the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

"Just a dog" brings out what's good in me
and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog"
but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a human."

So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog," just smile,
because they "just don't understand!"

Every barn needs cats and we have several of them!  Our calico has made sure to populate the barn over the past 7 years and is now a grandma!

Amos and Andy are the pygmy goats who live here and keep the barnyard patrolled.  They are pictured here as kids and are now about twice this size.  We got them about 8 years ago, they provide general entertainment and wreak havoc on occasion.  Amos passed away in 2009, but Andy is doing fine and likes to hang out with the cows and pigs.

We have a colorful rooster who moved in one day about 5 years ago and runs the barnyard, even the goats obey him.  We call him Rudy, he is the reason we have all the chickens now, he was so fun to have around.  But he has passed on to the big coop in the sky in the winter of 2008.

We also have a pond full of pets and enjoy seeing them up close on occasion as well as the glimpes of the herons who live here and grace us with their presence.

Cedar Lane Farm is home to deer, fox, coyotes, wild turkeys, quail and pheasant along with forest creatures like skunks, racoons, opposums and squirrels. We enjoy seeing the wildlife around the farm and appreciate being able to spend our lives here with them.  Thanks for visiting our pet page!
